Kakariki or Red Crowned Parakeets, are about the brightest bird in the bush of New Zealand. These colourful members of the parrot family are almost extinct in the wild on mainland New Zealand. Notable for their colourful bright green, bright crimson forehead, crown and a streak through the eye with violet-blue on the wings. Kākāriki are usually solitary or found in pairs, although in autumn and winter they may form small flocks. Kākāriki means ‘green’ in Māori. In large flight situations, compatibility with other birds should be of no concern. Kakarikis are enthusiastic bathers so fresh water in a large shallow container must always be available. Kakarikis are wonderful aviary birds.
The Pied Kakariki, also known as the Red-Crowned Parakeet, is one of New Zealand’s most colorful and active parakeets. These beautiful birds are known for their bright green plumage, crimson forehead and crown, and violet-blue markings on the wings.
Kakariki means “green” in Māori. In the wild, Kakarikis are usually found alone or in pairs. During autumn and winter, they may also gather in small flocks.
At Aviora Haven, we love Kakarikis for their energetic personality, playful nature, and colorful appearance. Pied Kakarikis have attractive pied markings that make each bird unique.
Kakarikis are extremely active, curious, and playful birds. They love to explore their surroundings and investigate anything new.
They are also friendly and fearless. Because of their curious nature, they can get into places you may not expect. Owners should always keep a close eye on them when they are outside their cage or aviary.
Kakarikis enjoy being around their owners. However, they are not usually cuddly birds and may prefer not to be handled often.
Their active personality makes them excellent birds for spacious flights and aviaries.
Kakarikis are wonderful aviary birds. They need enough space to fly, exercise, and explore.
A secure aviary is especially important because Kakarikis are very fast flyers. We recommend using a double-door entry system to help prevent accidental escapes.
Kakarikis are enthusiastic bathers. Always provide fresh, clean water in a large, shallow container for bathing.
These birds can also overheat easily. Keep them comfortable and provide good ventilation. Avoid excessive heat and direct exposure to very hot conditions.
Kakarikis can live comfortably with compatible birds in a large flight or aviary. However, each bird should have enough space to move freely and retreat when needed.
New Zealand
Kakarikis have a variety of natural calls and vocalizations. Their calls can be heard while they are flying, feeding, or interacting with other birds.
Approximately 10.25 inches / 65 grams
With proper care, Kakarikis can live approximately 10 to 20 years.
Kakarikis are fairly easy to sex.
Males are generally larger and have a larger beak than females.
Red-Crowned Kakarikis can be relatively easy to breed in captivity when provided with suitable housing and nesting conditions.
In the wild, they nest in holes in tree trunks and branches. They may also use cliff crevices or burrows.
In captivity, they readily use nesting boxes. A female may lay approximately five to eight white eggs.
During the breeding season, provide the pair with a quiet and secure nesting area. Avoid unnecessary disturbance around the nest.
A varied and nutritious diet is important for keeping your Kakariki healthy.
At Aviora Haven, a suitable diet can include quality parakeet seed and Australian Blend Goldenfeast. You can also offer appropriate fresh foods as part of a balanced diet.
Recommended foods include:
Fresh, clean drinking water should always be available.

If a gender option is not listed for a particular bird, the species may be monomorphic, meaning the sex cannot be reliably determined by appearance.
DNA testing is available for eligible birds to help determine gender. DNA testing costs $149 per bird and may add approximately 3–6 or more weeks to the estimated delivery time while the results are obtained.
Please see our FAQs for additional information about DNA testing.
